Miami University ending COVID-19 vaccine mandate, effective immediately - WLWT Cincinnati | By The Perfect Enemy
Miami University has announced that they are ending mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for university students and employees.”Our vaccination policy helped us achieve a level of immunity that has allowed us to keep our university open and functioning during the pandemic,” the university said in an email, signed by the school’s COVID Response Team. “Over time, we have seen that the vaccine remains effective at reducing the severity of symptoms associated with COVID-19, but does not always prevent the spread of new variants of the virus.”We continue to recommend that all members of our community receive the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters if they are able as a way to reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms,” the university continued.”The university will still collect COVID-19 vaccination information from students on a voluntary basis. Vaccines and boosters are available on campus through Student Health Services and Employee Health Services.”Miami implemented its vaccination mandate in November of 2021, encompassing all students, both undergraduate and graduate, and staff, both full-time and faculty, that had a presence on any university campus or property. The school’s mandate included exceptions for those with medical documentation, sincerely held religious beliefs or practices or reasons of conscience (philosophical, ethical beliefs). Miami’s mandate came after 150 university faculty members signed an open letter to university officials, calling to make proof of vaccination a requirement following full FDA approval of Pfizer’s vaccine. At the time of the mandate being announced, about 25% of Miami’s on-campus student body had either not received the vaccine or refused to share their vaccine status with school leaders.According to their websites, schools across Ohio like Xavier and Ohio State still have COVID-19 vaccine requirements for students. On its website, the University of Cincinnati says it “strongly recommends” its students, faculty and staff be vaccinated.
