From Greenscreen to Global: RTL’s Studio 4 Blends Virtual Sets, IP Workflows, and Smart Automation | By The Digital Insider

RTL's Deutschland Studio 4 stands as a shining example of what happens when visionary planning meets the latest in broadcast technology. Located at RTL’s headquarters in Cologne, the greenscreen studio is the result of a close collaboration with system integrator KST Moschkau. The goal? Build a studio environment that could react quickly to the fast-changing needs of modern television production, from daily magazine shows to high-profile sports coverage.

A key component is the use of Zero Density's real-time virtual production platform, integrated with Unreal Engine to create immersive, broadcast-ready virtual sets. Combined with Panasonic Kairos for live production switching and the CamBot.system for robotic camera control, RTL has built a future-proof studio that’s as flexible as it is innovative.

What makes this approach unique is its focus on automation as a tool for empowerment, not replacement. CamBot provides the ability to manage multiple studio configurations, automate camera motion, and separate technical workflows by user level. This means operators see only what they need, while advanced users can program complex behaviors for lighting, graphics, and movement. And because the system integrates with Mosart, RTL has the option to streamline its automation workflows, simplifying some operations while enhancing creative control.

Studio 4 is not only a model for smart studio integration, it’s a clear indicator of where the industry is headed. By harmonizing technologies across RTL and ntv, the company is creating a unified, scalable infrastructure that minimizes downtime, maximizes staff expertise, and delivers stunning content to audiences at home and around the world. With robotic automation, IP workflows, and virtual production at the helm, RTL’s Studio 4 represents the next generation of broadcast excellence.
