Efficiency of Ukrainian Drones Might Be Affected By The Coming Winter - Technology Org | By The Digital Insider

Drones are extremely important in the Russo-Ukrainian War. Especially for the Ukrainian defensive effort. Despite all of the aid Ukraine is getting from its Western allies, Ukraine is still at a disadvantage in terms of armour, artillery and, of course, aviation. However, relatively cheap drones can level the playing field at least a little bit. Ukrainian FPV drones are destroying soldiers and armoured equipment.

FPV drones are just drones controlled through special virtual reality goggles. This first-person-view allows these drones to reach a huge level of precision. They are loaded with explosives and accurately dive towards their targets.

Sometimes those targets are hideouts and ammunition stocks, sometimes – separate soldiers and sometimes – powerful armoured machinery, such as tanks. Russians are using all kinds of jammers to try and defend against the Ukrainian drones, but they are still very effective.

However, the winter, which is already creeping into Ukraine, might reduce the effectiveness of the Ukrainian drones. TSN journalist Yulia Kiriyenko told about the defense of Ukrainian soldiers near Bakhmut in the Donetsk region.

In this report, the soldiers showed fields littered with the bodies of dead Russians that no one was picking up, and told stories of how the Russians were attacking in waves despite their enormous losses. Bakhmut is occupied, but the Russians are unable to penetrate further, even though they do not value their lives.

The weather will certainly change the warfare in Ukraine for the next few months. And not only on the ground. Reconnaissance spotted a Russian T-72 tank near Klishchiivka. It was parked and covered with various brushes to hide it from the drones, but the machine was still spotted. The Ukrainian drone pilots decided to send a kamikaze-type drone towards it.

The kamikaze drone took off to destroy the Russian tank, but the operation was unsuccessful. The drone broke down due to the cold weather. The temperature around Bakhmut is still slightly above zero degrees Celsius, but cold and humid.

Such weather not only creates impassable mud on the ground, but also damages the electronic equipment. Drones use batteries that perform less well in cold conditions. In fact, once the more serious winter sets in, the effective range of drones will shrink significantly. Besides, it’s now raining, and electronics don’t like water.

However, this time the T-72 did not escape. When one drone malfunctioned, the second took off and soon the tank, hidden in the pile of trash, became a pile of waste itself. The good thing is that the Ukrainians have quite a few drones. So many, in fact, that now they are being used against separate soldiers too, not just against larger groups and equipment.
