How much more powerful is the Bayraktar TB3 drone compared to its predecessor which was highly successful in Ukraine, and what else is worth paying attention to?

Turkish defense company Baykar Defense has announced that its latest reconnaissance and combat strike drone, the Bayraktar TB3, has flown in the air for the first time on October 27th, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.

It was noted that the first takeoff of the Bayraktar TB3 took place at the airport of the Çorlu Flight Training and Test Center in Northwestern Turkey.

At the same time, this new drone has a primarily “maritime” purpose, as it is essentially Baykar Defense’s first drone that can take off and land on ships with a flight deck, and has folding wings for storage in a folded shape in the ship’s hangar.

The Baykar Defense company published not only photos, but also a video from the first flight of the Bayraktar TB3. From this visual material, we do not see what exact series of flight tests were carried out using this drone. But important features and characteristics were demonstrated, such as the ability to take off both from short runways and from the ground, not to mention aircraft carriers.

The first presentation of Bayraktar TB3 was held in March of this year. Back then, the main characteristics of this drone became known: the length of the fuselage is 8.35 meters, the wingspan is 14 meters, the maximum take-off weight is 1450 kg, and the combat load is up to 280 kg. Weapons can be placed on 6 suspension points. The unmanned aircraft uses a PD170 engine with a peak power of 128 kW.

Some sources claim that the Bayraktar TB3’s on-board equipment set will be modular. It is also likely that this drone, unlike the Bayraktar TB2, will be able to use L-UMTAS anti-tank guided missiles and Bozok flying bombs.

According to current plans, serial production of Bayraktar TB3 should start in 2024. The model will primarily be manufactured for the Turkish Navy.

In fact, the Bayraktar TB3 development program was implemented precisely because Turkey needed an alternative to the F-35B, the purchase of which Ankara was denied by US sanctions imposed after the agreement between Turkey and the Russian Federation on the purchase of S-400 air defense systems.
