Health experts worry about rise of COVID-19, flu after holidays
As holiday gatherings and travel wind down, health officials in New England are once again warning about a potential uptick in flu and COVID-19 cases. While data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that flu activity is minimal in New Hampshire, there has been a recent increase in hospitalizations.State data shows COVID-19-related hospitalizations have more than doubled in the past week to 60 people receiving care, the most since at least March. Hospital ICUs and emergency departments are near capacity.Across the country, nearly 80% of hospitalizations for COVID-19 are among people over 50. Health experts said they’re growing increasingly concerned about the potential for a resurgence after the holidays.”We’re seeing a rise in hospitalizations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, likely driven by this new XBB (COVID-19) variant,” said John Brownstein, chief innovation officer at Boston Children’s Hospital. “And this is before we even get to New Year’s Eve celebrations, and what we’re worried about is people coming together, many people with COVID not testing or staying home when they’re sick and leading to a surge into January.”Health experts said anyone who is feeling sick should stay home this New Year’s Eve and get tested.
